HOT AND COLD: The End Is Here
Eli Ridgway Gallery was proud to host HOT AND COLD: The End Is Here, a group exhibition marking the release of the final issue of HOT & COLD — the long-running Bay Area artist zine conceived by Oakland-based artists Chris Duncan and Griffin McPartland. Across a wide range of media, the exhibition gathered works by the artists who contributed to the project over its seven-year run.
The show ran September 11 – October 10, 2009, with programming throughout: film screenings, live art and music performances, comedy, and a social gathering beyond the gallery walls led by David Wilson.
HOT & COLD, Issue #1
HOT & COLD is more than a zine — part book, part artwork, part Fluxus project, part exhibition, part creative adventure. Conceived in 2002 by Chris Duncan and Griffin McPartland, the project began with issue #10 and counted down, releasing a new issue roughly each year with contributions from hundreds of artists. Hand-built in an edition of 150, each issue was silk-screened, sewn, stitched, stickered, stenciled, and color-copied — riding the line between artist book and Fluxus creation, and serving as a time capsule of an interconnected web of Bay Area artists.
The final issue, #1, was released at the gallery on September 11, 2009 — exactly seven years to the day after the inaugural issue. It arrived loaded: two 7-inch vinyl records (with music from Tommy Guerrero, Amy Franceschini, Soft Circle, Urxed, and Namesake), a DVD of video and music from the TM Sisters, small zines from Ryan Wallace and Griffin McPartland, a pull-out poster from Reed Anderson, hand-made original works from Daniel Tierney and Monica Canilao, and a postcard-sized screen print from Will Yackulic — plus buttons, a bandana, stickers, a golden ticket, and much, much more.
Over its seven years HOT & COLD was exhibited at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and acquired in full by the Museum of Modern Art, New York, for its permanent collection.
